The Sharecroppers is a country/roots band with a thorough grasp of American popular music history from the pioneering recordings of Elvis at "Sun" to the mid sixties country crossover of the likes of Joe South. The band as recorded is composed of Ron "Big Daddy Sun" Cannon on guitar and vocals, Harry Trumfio, also of "The Pulsars" on Almo Records, on drums, Gordon Patriarca, also of "Yard sale" on Homefront Records, on bass, and Tom "Bogo" Boghossian on guitar.
Their CD "FINGER LICKIN' GOOD", ©(Cowpie 2301), has thirteen cuts recorded in the heart of Bucktown at Kingsize Sound Labs . Kingsize is considered to be the bastion of Chicago's current "alternative" music scene. The production is sparse and contemporary with just enough extras to fill out the sound without cluttering the biting guitar and vocal work of Ron Cannon. Eleven of the cuts are originals augmented by two covers of pre-rock era tunes from Blindbelly and Jimmy Rogers. The title cut is a funky ditty about going out on Friday nights to Ruby's "All You Can Eat" cafe on " old route seven" for a steaming plate full of that delectable southern delight, chittlins (or Chitterlings for those of you who prefer to eat high on the hog). Recorded essentially live in the studio this cut is really a greasy treat! The album starts off with I Won't Tell You, a ripping rockabilly stomper about living out your own life without the clutter of "friendly" advice from others. The theme emphasizes every person's responsibility for their own "Karma". A guitar bridge breaks the tempo with the melody from an old gospel tune called You Got To Walk That Lonesome Valley. Other literary references can be heard in Cannon's guitar work which is reminiscent of the work on Joe South's Walk A Mile In My Shoes, a jangly, slightly buzzy sound that makes one think of a sitar.
